China Yongren 300MW/1200MWh Vanadium Flow Battery Energy Storage Project

Project Overview

The Yongren 300MW/1200MWh Vanadium Redox Flow Battery (VRFB) Energy Storage Project is located in Maila Industrial Park, Yongren County, Chuxiong Yi Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province, China. Developed by JJCN Group, it stands as one of China’s largest long-duration vanadium flow battery energy storage stations, with a total investment of approximately RMB 3.382 billion and a land area of 193.44 mu.

The project is implemented in two phases: Phase I of 100MW/400MWh and Phase II of 200MW/800MWh. It deploys 600 sets of containerized vanadium flow battery systems, equipped with PCS, equalization cabinets and a supporting 220kV step-up substation. The designed operational lifespan reaches 25 years. It is projected to achieve an annual charging volume of 720 million kWh and annual discharging volume of 504 million kWh upon full commissioning.

Technology Features

The station adopts mature vanadium flow battery (VFB) technology, well-suited for grid-scale long-duration energy storage. Core advantages include:

Core Functions & Value

1.Peak shaving and valley filling: Absorb surplus power during off-peak hours and release power during peak demand to stabilize grid load.

2.Renewable accommodation: Boost consumption of local solar and wind power, mitigate fluctuation of new energy output.

3.Grid support: Provide frequency regulation, voltage support and emergency backup power to enhance power system resilience.

4.Source-grid-load-storage integration: Coordinate with local photovoltaic bases and other storage assets to build Yunnan’s clean energy base, supporting China’s dual-carbon goals.

Project Significance

This landmark long-duration storage facility accelerates Yunnan’s development of a “source-grid-load-storage” integrated new energy cluster. It will drive the local vanadium energy storage industrial chain, create over 200 local jobs, and demonstrate the commercial viability of large-scale VRFB technology for global long-duration energy storage markets.
